About
Wind Powering America

wpa_logo_sm.jpgWind Powering America (WPA) is a federal program that helps states increase the use of wind energy.  It augments the efforts of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) wind research program, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), and other wind related organizations.

Wind energy will help Nevada meet its growing demand for clean electricity. It will also diversify the state's economy, provide economic development and create high paying jobs.

Because Nevada does not yet have any wind projects on-line WPA has designated Nevada as a Priority State. As a result, WPA will help Nevada develop wind power pilot projects; replicate successes in other states; and develop and disseminate wind information.

WPA will also help identify and address gaps in technical information and provide tools to help get wind projects off the ground. Examples include: development and access to simplified spreadsheet tools for initial analyses of wind project economics and economic development impacts, development and distribution of state specific wind maps and small wind application guidebooks, and publication of a brochure that focuses on wind opportunities, case studies, and economics for rural electric coops.

Through WPA, Nevada will enhance its power generation options; protect local environments, and increase energy and national security.
The WPA program in Nevada is managed by HiTech Communications. Click here to view the latest Wind Powering America Wind Energy Update.

Nevada Wind Working Group

WPA created the Nevada Wind Working Group (NWWG) to identify specific state concerns, barriers, and obstacles to wind development in Nevada. The NWWG is a collaboration of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and industries interested in wind development. NWWG meetings are posted on the Calendar section of this web site. Meeting minutes and other documents are posted on the NWWG’s page of this web site. The Chairman of the NWWG is Bob Cooper.

State Wind Outreach Team

The State Wind Outreach Team (SWOT) is an arm of the NWWG that reaches out to Nevada’s agricultural community, county commissioners, legislators, utilities, utility commissions, municipalities/communities, environmental advocates, rural development groups, educational institutions, land-owners and others. To become a member of the SWOT, please contact Rich Hamilton.
