Western Wind and Solar Integration Study

The Western Wind and Solar Integration Study (WWSIS) examines the costs and operating impacts due to the variability and uncertainty of wind, PV, and CSP on the grid on the power system operated by the WestConnect group of utilities in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming. It is an operations study, (rather than a transmission study), although different scenarios model different transmission build-outs to deliver power. Using a detailed power system production simulation model, the study identifies operational impacts and challenges of wind energy penetration up to 30% of annual electricity consumption.

This study was set up to answer questions that utilities, public utilities commissions, developers, and regional planning organizations had about renewable energy use in the west:

  • Does geographic diversity of renewable energy resource help mitigate variability?
  • How do local resources compare to out-of-state resources?
  • Can balancing area cooperation help mitigate variability?
  • What is the role and value of energy storage?
  • Should reserve requirements be modified?
  • What is the benefit of forecasting?
  • How can hydropower help with integration of renewables?

AWS TrueWind

windnavogatorlogo-none-z0-w208-h39.jpgAWS Truewind has produced high-resolution wind maps for over 60 countries using its proprietary MesoMap® system. Truewind's windNavigator interactive map can be found here. TrueWind also has created non-interactive maps for Northeastern Nevada and Northern Nevada.

Benefits of Wind
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has just published the economic benefits, carbon dioxide emission reductions and water conservation benefits of 1000 megawatts of wind in Nevada.

Economic Impacts of Wind Farms in Nevada
turbines_with_hay_bales.gifWhen looking at wind power's potential in Nevada it is helpful to look at both the economic potential and the resource potential. In May of 2005 the Nevada Commission on Economic Development issued "A Study of Five Year Expected Impacts from Wind Powered Electrical Production Facilities in White Pine County Nevada", a report that looks at the economic impact of wind farms in White Pine County.

Additional Resources

Federal Wind Siting Information Center
The federal government administers much of Nevada's windy lands. Recently, the U.S. Department of energy created this web site as part of the federal government's effort to support the increased deployment of wind energy facilities on public, private, and tribal lands, airspace, and offshore.

Wind Power Monthly
Windpower Monthly is the world's leading wind energy news magazine -- a uniquely independent information source on the world's fastest growing renewable. Forthright news interpretation and critical analyses of key issues, concisely reported, presented with clarity and wit, to keep you appraised of the facts about wind power and its markets. Often provocative, sometimes arrogant, occasionally irreverent, always informed, Windpower Monthly blows fresh air into the international energy debate.

Wind Energy Weekly

Wind Energy Weekly is published by the American Wind Energy Association. It is packed with detailed and up-to-date information on the world of wind energy.

Windstats Newsletter

is a quarterly international wind energy publication with news, reviews on wind turbine production and operating data from over 12,000 wind turbines plus much more.

Long Range Radar Tool
This section of the Federal Aviation Administration's web site provides wind developers with a tool that evaluates the potential impacts of obstructions on Air Defense and Homeland Security radars. This evaluation does not indicate potential impacts on other radars. This is only a prescreening tool, intended to assist proponents in their initial siting process.
